Fé15 A Hurling Co. 1/2 Final

Fr.O Neills 4:07 v Watergrasshill 4:06

This eagerly awaited game was played in Aghavine on Fri. week last. Due to the unavailability of Ballinlough pitch, the original venue, a toss resulted on us getting a home tie. Watergrasshill were quickest off the blocks with a well taken goal from their full forward.  Arthur Nganou operating from full forward replied with two fine individual goals, A William Abernethy free, a lovely point from play by David O’Neill and two close-in frees from John Millerick gave us a 2-4 to 1-3 lead at half time.

Points were exchanged in the opening ten minutes of the second half. Brian Kenneally with a point from play and a fine well taken goal from him was vital at this stage as it put 7 points between the sides. Watergrasshill rallied again and with ten minutes scored a goal and a point to reduce the deficit again. Our opponents began to dominate but with Conor Lee pulling off three fine saves and heroic defending by the full back line we held our lead. Further goals were exchanged and we led by four points entering injury time. Late in injury time Watergrasshill got a goal but Fr. O’Neills held out for a one point victory at the whistle.

Having been short a few regular players due to holidays this was always going to be a tough game but our substitutes deputised very well. A County Final awaits and Kiltha Og will be our opponents having beaten Glen Rovers. This will be a mouth-watering tie which will be played in Shanagarry on Wed July 15. Results against Kiltha Og at this level have gone against us in recent years. They are a fine side. Looking at our outfit from the sideline, we seem to be a team on a mission to atone for two final defeats least year. There is a great spirit in the team and it would not surprise me if we got a result against our old rivals. Roll on Wed night in Shanagarry at 7.30pm.

TEAM: C. Lee, Diarmuid O’Neill, W. Abernethy, C. Murphy, M. Cody, C. Cullinane, S. Shanahan, L. Nguefang, P. Hassett, J. Millerick, David O’Neill, B. Kenneally, E McEvoy, A. Nganou, J. Shine. Subs: D. Higgins, B. Coleman, N.Kemthong, T. Wall, E. O’Keeffe, C. McHugh.

Fé15 A HURLING COUNTY FINAL

FR.O’NEILLS 5:07 v KILTHA OG 2:11

A splendid Shanagarry pitch and a clear sky was the venue between local rivals Ourselves and Kiltha Og in the U15A Hurling County Final on Wednesday night last. With both teams having some great victories on the road to the final, it was great that two neighbouring parishes were meeting here for what was to be a truly remarkable game.

Kiltha Og opened the scoring with a point from play but within two minutes, Jason Hankard had the ball in the back of the net. With Loic Nguefang and Aidan McEvoy dominant at midfield, an ample amount of ball was being supplied to the full forward line. Jason, with a further three goals and a point, gave us a commanding 12 point lead. Kiltha Og were in shock early on but rallied with three points from frees and one from play. Although we had a 10 point lead at half time, 4-3 to 0-5 it was a more even game than the scoreline suggested, the goals making the difference. Kiltha Og were not giving up and the opening ten minutes of the second half was frantic stuff. Points from Loic and Arthur kept us ticking over in this period. Conor in goal, Ceolan, William and Sam defended strongly in that second half and that early goal Kiltha Og needed was not arriving. Ciaran Culinane at centre back was outstanding throughout and Peter Hassett and Matthew Cody covered the wings with great aplomb. Kiltha Og did get three points but Arthur with a great goal kept us well ahead. Kiltha Og worked hard and got a goal and a point in the 55th minute which left 8 points between the sides. John Millerick who worked tirelessly throughout won a great free which he duly converted. Up front, David O’Neill, Brian Kenneally and Jake Shine blocked and harried and with the game drawing to a close Kiltha Og got a goal and a point to bring it to a five point game. Evan McEvoy came on shortly afterwards and contributed to the game. Cathal McAllister blew up on the 62nd minute.

Joyous scenes followed as recent final losses were all forgotten about. We were now County Champions. Arthur received the cup. Celebrations went on to Garryvoe Hotel and the convoy of cars went through Ladysbridge and Ballymacoda late into the night. Thanks to all the 26 players who put in a great effort in recent weeks to get this result. Great credit to Brian, Billy, Philip and Shane for guiding them on their path to victory. Overall the game was a great advert for Juvenile Hurling. It was tough and the striking from both teams was very good. Cathal left the game flow and end to end Hurling was the order of the day. There is great work being done down in this neck of the woods and both teams can look forward to some cracking ties again next year when they will be well set up for U16 level.
